Mdzananda Animal Clinic: From Container Shelter to Trusted Vet Care in Khayelitsha
In the vibrant community of Khayelitsha, a local hero named Mr Joe embarked on a mission to care for his neighbours' pets. Armed with a simple trolley and a water bucket, he offered baths and meals to the community's animals. His selfless dedication soon attracted a group of volunteers, and together, they began transforming the lives of countless pets.
A long-time volunteer managed to secure funding to support Mr Joe's efforts, which marked the beginning of Mdzananda Animal Clinic. Overwhelmed by the generous support, Mr Joe entrusted the project to this volunteer, who expanded the clinic's operations. Although Mr Joe is now elderly, he remains a cherished figure, continuing to educate the community, find homes for homeless pets, and even tending a vegetable garden at the clinic to showcase the potential of small spaces.

Their Mission: Affordable Veterinary Services & Animal Welfare in Cape Town Townships
Mdzananda Animal Clinic envisions a community where every animal, whether a pet, a neighbour's pet, a stray or a farm animal, is cared for with love and respect. The mission is to enhance the well-being of animals and their human companions through providing low-cost veterinary healthcare and education, and forming partnerships both locally and beyond. By nurturing animals, the clinic instils values of responsibility, compassion and non-violence in people, fostering a healthier, more caring community.

Empowering Kids Through Animal Care Education in Khayelitsha Schools
Marcelle du Plessis, Fundraising and Communications Executive, highlights the clinic's commitment to community engagement. "We understand that neglect often stems from a lack of education or resources, not cruelty," she explains. The clinic's educational outreach programmes aim to uplift the community, offering accessible veterinary care and fostering partnerships. This inclusive approach has earned Mdzananda the trust and respect of Khayelitsha residents.
In a groundbreaking collaboration with local schools, Mdzananda integrated animal care lessons into life skills classes in recent years, aiming to continue these classes annually. “At Mdzananda, we believe that caring for animals teaches qualities such as respect for life, compassion, companionship and responsibility - attributes that not only help children care for animals but also contribute to their development into well-rounded adults,” says Marcelle du Plessis. Pet Rescue and Adoption Services at Khayelitsha’s Mdzananda Animal Clinic
The Mdzananda Animal Clinic is a trusted sanctuary for pets in Khayelitsha. Residents feel comfortable surrendering their pets to the clinic, knowing they will be treated with care and compassion. This trust is crucial in ensuring pets receive the necessary care rather than being abandoned or neglected.
As a veterinary clinic with limited shelter capacity, Mdzananda can house only 30 dogs and 15 cats at a time – and the need is often greater. For this reason, the Adoptions Manager & his team work around the clock to help abandoned animals find permanent homes.

Fundraising Events for Animal Welfare: Promenades and Partnerships

Paws on the Promenade: Strut Your Mutt for Animal Care
The Paws on the Promenade dog walk fundraiser is just one of many community-involving initiatives that Mdzananda focuses on to build resources for the animals in their care. Humans and their four-legged friends are invited to join this annual event, held in partnership with Vondi's Holistic Pet Nutrition. The 5 km walk along Cape Town's scenic Sea Point promenade starts at the Mouille Point lighthouse and extends to the Sea Point swimming pool. Various shorter routes are available for older or struggling pets (and humans). Walkers without dogs are welcome too.
Love is in the Air: Be a Valentine to a Mdzananda Pet!
