Water Conditions
Environmental conditions are one of the top considering factors when it comes to caring for fish. If you’re just starting out, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got your hands on some hardy fish that are adaptable to most water conditions.
Size Matters
Almost all cold-blooded animals—including fish—will continue to grow as long as they are alive, and might even outgrow a small tank. The full-grown size of a fish is determined by genetics, not by tank size, so it would be a good idea to factor this in when deciding which fish or tank to buy.
Food Scale
Overfeeding is one of the most common mistakes among fish owners. Although the exact amount of food will be determined by the fish species, generally speaking, pet fish usually require very small quantities of food. In fact, some fish can go up to an entire week without being fed. Overfeeding may result in bad water quality from uneaten excess food, which could cause overall poor health for your fish.
Fish Friends
Believe it or not, not all fish get along swimmingly with each other. If you plan to have more than one species of fish together in a tank make sure they are compatible or else they might just Krill each other!

Neon Tera
These fish are small in size but take full advantage of any space they occupy. You can also appreciate the beautiful colour they’ll add to your tank. Neon Tetras love company and enjoy swimming in groups, so don’t forget to give them school friends.
Guppies
Guppies are notably a beautiful species of fish that are also quite hardy. They boast a wide range of colours and aren’t fussy eaters - some adult guppies have been known to survive nearly 2 weeks without food (guppy fry are more sensitive, though, and may not make it past day 3 without food). Take note, though, that if both sexes are present in a tank, you can expect many more guppies than you initially started with!
Kuhli Loach
The Kuhli Loach is an eel-like fish that is peaceful in nature. Since these fish are bottom-feeders, they aren't too fussed about eating the leftover food that sinks to the bottom of the tank, plus they'll help keep the tank clean while dining!
Sword Tails
As one would expect, swordfish get their name from their prominent sword-shaped tails. Growing up to 12cm in length, and with low demands for water conditions, swordtails are perfect for new fish-keepers. Keep in mind that they thrive better in communities, so it’s always better to keep more than one, preferably 5 or more.
