In the heart of Langa, among the narrow streets and vibrant voices of a close-knit community, there’s a quiet revolution unfolding — one of compassion, courage, and unwavering love for animals who have known too much suffering. It’s called Happy Tails Langa, and it’s not just a rescue; it’s a lifeline. A promise that no animal will be forgotten. That even in the hardest places, love can find a way.

The Stray Who Changed Everything: One Dog, Nine Pups, and a Life Transformed

This extraordinary story begins with one woman — Katja — who had already spent years helping animals in need, assisting various rescue groups, and answering the call whenever a helpless soul crossed her path. But everything changed during a film shoot in Langa in 2022. There, Katja spotted a dog in desperate condition: walking on three legs, skin ravaged by mange, and painfully thin. Advice from others was grim — take her to be put down. But Katja couldn’t bring herself to do it.

Instead, she went home, grabbed a bag of dog food, and returned to find her. What she discovered would alter the course of her life: the injured dog, huddled in a makeshift shelter, lying in a pile of rubbish — with nine puppies. Around her were other dogs in equally dire condition. As Katja asked around, trying to understand who these animals belonged to, she uncovered something that struck her heart deeply: an 11-year-old boy named Emihle had been feeding these dogs with whatever scraps he could spare, even from his own meals.

And so, Happy Tails Langa was born — not out of resources or planning, but out of love and necessity.

How Happy Tails Langa Is Saving Township Dogs Through Vet Care, Sterilisation, and Adoption

Katja began visiting Emihle regularly, bringing food, offering guidance, and teaching him how to care for animals. Soon, more children joined in. Together, they ventured across Langa to help other animals in need. Their numbers grew, and so did their impact.

From building kennels for dogs exposed to the cold, to coordinating vet care, vaccinations, sterilisations, and adoption drives — Happy Tails Langa became a force for good in a place where animal welfare is often overlooked. Every animal saved was a victory. Every tail that wagged again, a quiet revolution.

Officially an NPO, Powered by Love: Happy Tails Langa’s Next Chapter

In August 2024, Happy Tails Langa officially became a registered NPO (NPO Number: 309-973). The need had outgrown informal efforts — now, they had a banner under which to rally support, organise fundraisers, and partner with others who shared their vision. Among the most impactful steps forward was their partnership with the SPCA, launching a mass sterilisation campaign in Langa that continues to this day. It’s a vital mission: to stop the cycle of suffering at its root by preventing unwanted litters.

The Team Behind Happy Tails Langa: One Woman, Big Impact

While Katja is the beating heart of the organisation, she is quick to credit her dedicated support system. Yolande Koegelenberg, who manages social media, fundraising posters, and the mountain of paperwork that comes with running an NPO, is a vital part of the Happy Tails journey. Volunteers — when they can — pitch in, helping to care for the animals or support adoption events. But it’s still, in many ways, a “one-woman show”, with Katja and her partner sheltering the animals between their home and his workshop, where they can roam freely and feel, perhaps for the first time, what it means to be safe.

But there’s still so much to do.

Building a Kinder Future: Outreach and Education in Langa

Katja dreams of establishing a small container base in Langa — a permanent outreach point for monthly services like de-fleaing, food drops, and sign-ups for sterilisations. She believes deeply in the power of education, especially for the youth. Teaching children to recognise animals as sentient beings — capable of pain, joy, and love — is just as important as food or shelter. It’s how we build a kinder future.

Petworld Partnership Helps Happy Tails Langa Pets Find Forever Homes

Happy Tails Langa is also a proud partner of Petworld, participating in Petworld Adoption Day events, where their rescued animals find forever homes filled with warmth, play, and promise. It’s a joyful reminder that every small act of kindness matters — and that when we come together, transformation is possible.
